Why insulate your property?

Insulating and draft-proofing a property is the first step to a more energy efficient property and the most cost effective way to save money.

How do you insulate a building?

Loft insulation
According to the Energy Saving Trust, in an uninsulated home a quarter of your heat is lost through the roof, so loft insulation is one of the cheapest and most effective measures that can be undertaken. There can be issues with storage and when fitting extra insulation the roof needs to be well ventilated to prevent condensation. The current recommended minimum thickness of insulation is 270mm and if you have below 150mm, it is highly recommended that this be topped up.

Cavity wall insulation
Insulating your cavity walls can make a big impact especially on larger detached properties. The insulation is blown in either as insulation beads or a fibre. To test if a wall has insulation and it is suitable to be insulated, a 10mm hole is drilled and a borescope can be used to visually inspect the cavity.

Solid wall insulation
Older properties with solid walls can let out twice as much heat as cavity walls. These walls can be insulated either from the inside or outside. This will cost a lot more than insulating a standard cavity wall, but the savings on your heating bill will be greater. External insulation is simpler and will cause less disruption, but it will change the appearance of the property. Internal insulation is quite disruptive, but can be completed in stages.

Floor insulation
Timber floors can be insulated by lifting the floorboards and laying mineral wool insulation between the joists. Solid floors can be replaced or rigid insulation can be laid on top. Insulating floors that are above unheated spaces, such as garages can make considerable savings in heat loss and improve comfort levels.

This is a simple, but often overlooked improvement. Draught-proofed properties will save heat and be generally much more comfortable.

How can we help?

We have many years’ experience, are well-connected in the insulation industry and can provide an independent survey and advice on the best solutions for your property. We can also advise you on the Government schemes available such as the Energy Company Obligation (ECO). One of our insulation experts can provide a survey of your property from as little as £75 inclusive.
